Jerry W. Carey, 81
Latham—Jerry W. Carey died peacefully at home on October 31, 2013.
Born in Troy, he was the son of John and Irene Carey, and the brother of Robert Carey. Mr. Carey graduated from LaSalle Institute in Troy, and attended Siena College in Loudonville. He also served proudly in the U. S. Navy from 1951 to 1955. A Veteran of the Korean War, he was stationed in Great Lakes, IL, Norfolk, VA, Bayonne, NJ, and Sands Point, NY. He earned a Navy Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged in 1955.
While in the Navy, Mr. Carey met the love of his life, Alice A. (Michaud) Carey. They married in 1955 in Port Washington, NY, and were happily married for 45 years until Alice's death in 2000. Together, they made their home in Troy where they were loving parents to their three children, Thomas, Michael, and Deborah; and proud grandparents of their four granddaughters, Jennifer, Nicole, Alison, and Maureen. Mr. Carey's greatest passion in life was his family, and he was a dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Mr. Carey worked at the Watervliet Arsenal for three decades. Outside of work, he served as a baseball coach and manager at South Troy Little League, and as a volunteer in several roles at St. Joseph's Church, including the Holy Name Society and Bingo Committee. He also served as an Assistant Director of the Jefferson Street Youth Center, and was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) and the Troy Lodge of the Elks. A lifelong baseball fan, he enjoyed following his beloved Yankees.
Survivors include his daughter Deborah, her husband Edward Dopp, and their two children, Jennifer and Nicole of Latham; and his son, Michael, his wife Kate, and their two children, Alison and Maureen, of Providence, RI. Mr. Carey and his family especially appreciate the skilled care and compassion shown by John J. O'Bryan, MD, Cindy Joslin, and Hospice.
Memorial services and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Community Hospice Foundation will be appreciated.
