J.G. Fred Hiss, Jr.
September 6, 1932 — May 7, 2022
J.G. Fred Hiss, Jr., 89, of Colonie, NY, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2022. Born in September 1932 in Syracuse, NY, he was the son of the late Dr. J.G. Fred Hiss and Margaret Gillette. He is now reunited with his beloved Marialyce to whom he was married for 63 years.
Fred attended Syracuse University and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering in 1956. In 1970, he earned his Masters of Engineering at RPI. He retired in 1991 after 31 years of service with the NYS Department of Transportation. He was an active member of the Roessleville Presbyterian Church where he held numerous leadership roles. Fred considered his Church community as his extended family. Fred was an avid spectator and supporter of Syracuse University Athletics. He also had a great love of cats.
He is survived by his sister Suzanne Roos; his sons John Hiss III (Barbara), David Hiss (Laurie), and his daughter Judith Giovannetti (John); his grandchildren Shawn (Kat) Farkas, Scott (Christy Taylor) Farkas, Brian Farkas, Danielle (Dan) Smyth, Trevor (Jennifer) Hiss, and Kimberly Hiss; and his two great-grandchildren Aurelia Smyth and Mairyn Farkas.
In addition to his wife, Fred was predeceased by his daughter Beth.
Services will be held at New Comer Cremations and Funerals located at 343 New Karner Road, Albany NY. Visitation will take place on Thursday May 12, 2022 from 10:00am – 12:00pm with a service to begin at 12:00pm. Interment to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 983 Watervliet Shaker Rd, Albany, NY 12205 ·
Memorial donations in Fred's name can be made to Roessleville Presbyterian Church 1 N Elmhurst Ave, Albany, NY 12205.
