Latham- Joachim "Jack" Zumbo, Latham, NY, entered into eternal rest on November 8th 2015 at St. Peter's Hospice Inn, Albany, NY.
Jack was born in Albany NY, the son of Sicilian immigrants, on January 1, 1924. Upon graduation from Christian Brothers Academy in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in WWII until March 1946. During his time deployed he served as Seaman First Class, where he saw hostilities while serving in both the Mediterranean and Pacific. He was later attached to the U.S. Marines, 2nd Marine Division, B Company/Medical Platoon, as a Pharmacist Mate seeing duty on Saipan and Okinawa and with US Occupation Forces in Japan.
Honorably discharged in March 1946, Jack became co-owner of Tony's Tavern in Menands, NY. After marrying his beloved wife Anna in 1950, Jack worked at various jobs in the liquor industry, including bartending at his wife's family business, Panetta's Restaurant, ultimately opening Jack's Liquor Store in Clifton Park, in 1968, which continues to operate today under the ownership of his son, Chris. In 1973, Jack was one of the founding charter members of The Italian American Community Center.
Jack's earthly legacy includes the adoration of his wife, children and grandchildren and the respect of so many.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Anna Panetta Zumbo, daughter of famed Albany restauranteur Dominic Panetta; his devoted daughters: Donna Zumbo and Regina Zumbo-Colfels (Chris Colfels); his sons: Joseph Zumbo, Esq, Steven (Joann Franco) Zumbo owner of Antipasto's Restaurant and Christopher (Pam) Zumbo; his grandchildren: Jennifer (Ecleous) Zumbo Washington, Giulianna Zumbo, Nicklaus Colfels, and Andrew Gioacchino Zumbo and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Jack was predeceased by his parents, Joseph & Maria Zumbo, his sister Mary Fredericks and brother Frank Zumbo.
Visitation will be from 4pm to 7pm on Friday November 13 at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Saturday, November 14 at Our Lady of Assumption Church, Latham. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
