ALBANY – Joan Ann Murphy, 88, passed away on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at St. Peter's Hospital. Born in South Troy, she was the daughter of the late Harry J. and Elizabeth Leonore Cooley.

Joan was a Catholic Central High School graduate. She briefly attended the State Teacher's College in Albany, and during the war she worked for the Watervliet Arsenal. Joan married her late husband, Edward F. Murphy on January 18, 1947 and became a fulltime wife, mother and community volunteer. Her greatest love and focus was truly her family. She also held the position of President for Mothers of Priests Society of the Albany Diocese. Joan loved singing in church choirs and summer theatre. She also enjoyed playing BINGO, flowers, visiting the ocean and the Boston Red Sox. For a time Joan and Edward spent their winters in Golden Gate, Fla. After many years of living in East Harwich, Mass., they relocated to Albany as residents of Avila Retirement Community.

Along with her parents and husband, Joan was predeceased by her sisters Muriel Hennessey and Claire Johnson and step-granddaughter Stephanie Brown.
She is survived by her sons Michael (Barbara) Murphy of Millbrook, NY, Fr. Dennis Murphy of Ft. Plains, Terence (Holli) of Watervliet, Timothy (Michael LaSala) of Metuchen, NJ and Daniel (Amy) Murphy of Rensselaer, NY; sister Janet Reynolds of Long Island; grandchildren Alison of Newport, R.I., Sara of Kingston, R.I., Christopher of Troy, and Jackson of Rensselaer; step-grandson Brian Brown of Bronxville, NY; great-granddaughters Avery, Trinity, Grace and Lily, and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 am at Christ the King Church, 20 Sumter Avenue, Guilderland. Calling hours will be held at in the church chapel on Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. The parish family of Christ the King will gather on Sunday at 2:30 pm at the church for a service for prayer and remembrance. All are welcome. Interment will be at 2:00 pm at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville. In place of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant House at www.CovenantHouse.org or Mary Knoll Lay Missioners at www.MaryKnollMissioners.com in her name.
