ALBANY-Joan I. (Scherpenseel) Markes, 75, passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Albany Medical Center Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Albany, NY the daughter of the late John and N. Isabelle Brown Scherpenseel. Joan was raised in the Village of Colonie and was a graduate of Albany High School. She worked as head cook for the South Colonie School District and calculation clerk for the NYS Department of Labor for 31 ½ years of civil service before retiring in 1996. She was a lifetime communicant of Pine Grove Methodist Church in Colonie. Joan was an officer and shop steward for CSEA Local 670 and the Red Hat Society. She volunteered at Beltrone Living Center with Colonie Senior Citizen Services, where she received a volunteer Rookie of the year award in 2006. Joan enjoyed traveling, crocheting and baking. She was known as mom and gram to all that knew her. She will be sadly missed.
Joan is survived by her children Kim Bartlett (Toby) and Daryl (Nancy) Markes; her grandchildren Jason (Casey) Bartlett and Eric Bartlett and David Markes; her great grandchildren Jamie, Jackson and Josie Bartlett. She is also survived by her daughter- in- law Patti Markes; sister- in- law Shirley Scherpenseel and by her cats Cali and Coey.
In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her husband Richard L. Markes, Sr., her son Richard L. Markes, Jr., and by her brothers John G. Scherpenseel and Robert H. Scherpenseel.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 PM on Monday, June 17, 2013 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at Pine Grove Methodist Church, 1580 Central Ave. Albany, NY 12205.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Pine Grove Methodist Church in memory of Joan.
