GUILDERLAND - Joan L. (Salisbury) George, 79, died Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Guilderland Center Nursing Home. Born in Albany, she was the daughter of the late Leroy and Helen Salisbury. Raised and educated in Albany, Joan later fell in love with, and married her next door neighbor, John J. George in 1950. John's love of "the girl next door" was such a romantic cliché that it led to a touching article in the Times Union. Joan was a life-long homemaker; her specialties included baking highly desired and much sought-out Christmas cookies. Joan was a communicant of St. Madeline Sophie Church in Guilderland. She loved to sing in the church choir. She was also proud of her flower and vegetable gardens.
Survivors include her brother, Edward (Marcella) Salisbury of West Sand Lake; sisters, Helen (Charles) Mahoney of West Sand Lake and Shirley (William) Irwin of Guilderland; and her children, Patricia George of San Antonio, Texas; Susan Ventura of Troy; Therese (Ross) Famulare of Watervliet; Anita (Fred) Bohley of East Greenbush; Kevin (Kate) George of Rotterdam; Jil (James) Denn of Guilderland; and Maureen (Raymond) Irish of Altamont; 17 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
Joan was predeceased by sons John George, Brian George, and a stillborn son, Daniel, as well as her brothers Kenneth Salisbury and William Salisbury. The family would like to thank Joan's caregivers at Guilderland Center Nursing Home and Hospice.
