Joan A. VanDerVolgen, 91, of Colonie, passed away quietly on August 10, 2021 at Baptist Health Nursing and Rehab.
Born on Sand Creek Rd, in Colonie NY, she is the daughter of the late Edwin and Vera Flashover and beloved wife of the late John G. VanDerVolgen.
A homemaker, devoted mother and grandmother, enjoyed spending leisure time on bus trips and at Saratoga Casino. Joan helped family whenever she could, taking care of her mom, father and aunt. Every summer they vacationed on beautiful Willsboro Bay, Lake Champlain. John passed in 92. They belonged to West Albany Firehouse No 2, where John was president over 30 years, also serving as president for the Town of Colonie Fire Police, Past Presidents & Chiefs Association, and as a guard at Albany Airport. After John passed, Joan found love and companionship again with Robert (Bob) Englehardt of Colonie, the two were inseparable for more than 2 decades. Joan was a longtime member of Rossleville Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her younger brother Drew and is survived by her son Brett Allen, formerly "The Hittman, Brett Allen of PYX106," wife Dian VanDerVolgen (nee Jurczynski), an acclaimed Portrait Artist, her son Drew of Warrensburg (former Captain for The Sagamore on Lake George), her sister Gail McGarraugh of Colorado, Gail's sons Kevin, Matt and Josh, and their children, her brother David of Loudonville, her grandchildren Eva, Jacob, Rachel, Sarah and their children.
A short Graveside Service will take place Tuesday, August 17th at Noon @ St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, 303 Sand Creek Road, Colonie, next to where Joan grew up. Joan wasn't crazy about flowers, however, donations to Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands NY, with "Pet Connection" written in the memo are greatly appreciated
Mom, you will be greatly missed, you were always there for me... as I was for you.
