COLONIE - Joel F. Spitzer, 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 19, 2023.
Joel was born October 8, 1930, son of the late Nettie and William Spitzer. He grew up in the Bronx graduating from Christopher Columbus High School in 1947. He attended City College in New York City, graduating in 1951 with his Bachelor of Science degree. He went on to earn his J.D. from NYU Law School in 1954, passed the New York State Bar exam and was admitted to the practice of law in New York State in 1955.
He was a partner in a New York City Law firm from 1959 to 1967 before moving to Albany, New York where he spent more than 17 years as a staff attorney and then Acting Director of the Legal Aid Society of Albany, AKA Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York. In 1984, he was appointed as a New York State Assistant Attorney General in the Environmental Protection Bureau where he served until his retirement in May 1995.
He is pre-deceased by his wife, Bernice Spitzer (nee Bernice Sperber). They met in New York City where they both grew up and were married in 1956. He is survived by his children Andrew Spitzer, James Spitzer, and Jennifer Montimurro; his grandchildren Kaitlyn Montimurro, Benjamin Montimurro, and Zachary Montimurro.
A graveside service will be held on July 5th at 10am at Memory Gardens Cemetery & Memorial Park, 983 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Albany, NY 12205.
