Johan Gustav Hedberg

Johan 'John' Gustav Hedberg 88, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2020 from complications of myelodysplastic syndrome.

Born January 15, 1932 at the Seaman's Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, he was son of Norwegian Merchant Marine Captain Gunnar Hedberg and Camilla Eugenie Floystad Hedberg.

He grew up in Arendal, Norway and attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) graduating in 1955 with a degree in Chemical Engineering after which he worked for The DuPont Chemical Company for 35 years in the elastomers and cable division.

He married Lois Ann Stacey in 1954 in Belmont, Massachusetts and had four children, three daughters and one son. He is preceded in death by his first wife Lois Hedberg and his son Erik Peter.

He is survived by his second wife, Virgina Ann Frazier Hedberg of Clifton Park NY, his three daughters, Ann-Marie and husband Richard Hight of Houston TX, Laura and husband Dick Pierce of Damariscotta ME, and Kristina and husband Javier Caballero of New Ipswich NH, six grandchildren, Katherine, Nolan, and Karoline Hight, Emily Pierce, and Sonja and Noah Caballero, his sister, Edle Hedberg Johannesen of Arendal, Norway as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many loving relatives and friends.

John was 7 years old when the Germans invaded Norway in 1939. His father served during the war from 1939-1948 and John helped his mother and sister by riding his bike to obtain food and necessities during the occupation. He was an avid sailor growing up, was on the sailing team at MIT where he met his first wife Lois who attended Boston College.
He and Lois taught their daughters to sail. He described himself as a 'Jack of All Trades' who designed and built the family summer cottage in Barrington, New Hampshire where he will be laid to rest.
At MIT he was active in the sailing and crewing clubs. He worked in the dining halls as a waiter and eventually became Captain of the wait staff. The dining hall staff put on a formal dance every year and he did the lighting and wiring for those special events. He also was a Captain in the Army Reserves during and after college. As a retiree, he volunteered for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary with his wife Ann in Big Pine Key Florida. He and Ann later moved to Upstate New York to spend his final years closer to family.
