John A. Dean

February 15, 1937 — April 18, 2012

NISKAYUNA – John A. Dean, 75, passed away on April 18, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He succumbed to a battle with malignant melanoma that began in August of 2011.

John was born in Albany, NY on February 15, 1937, the son of the late Thomas James Dean and Anna May Joyce. He was a 1957 graduate of Siena College with a BA in English, and participated in Siena's ROTC Program. During Siena's 1956-57 Scholastic year John was one of 25 Siena Seniors honored in the yearly edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges". He served in the US Army's Psychological Operations Unit during the Vietnam War, and retired from the US Army Reserve as a Colonel in 1997. John began employment with the New York State Legislature after leaving the Service. While with the Legislature, he held a number of different positions. At the time of his retirement from State service in 1996 he was Director of the New York State Senate's Energy Committee.

There is some question as to who originally wrote these words about success many years ago, however they are a perfect description of John and the manner in which he lived his life: "That man is a success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who leaves the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem or a rescued soul; who never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had." John's presence will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

John was predeceased by his first wife, Carol J. Dean. His immediate survivors include his second wife, Iris B. Carty-Dean; his daughters Kathryn Burch (Josh) of Lanesboro, Mass; Kimberly Scheels (Ray) of Delanson, NY; his son Cory Dean of Niskayuna, NY; and his grandson Nicholas Scheels.

At John's request there will be no services. His ashes will be scattered this summer off the coast of Maine.
