Watervliet – John J. Barno, 80, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 surrounded by family and friends.
Son of the late Frank and Mae Barno, John was born and raised in Watervliet. He worked as a machine operator at Norton Company for over 20 years, which is where he met his loving wife and partner of 50 years, Ellen Barno. After an early retirement due to an injury, John shifted his focus to taking care of his grandson and proved to have an affinity for nurturing young inquisitive minds.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his devoted friend and brother-in-law, John Kane. He loved to travel and enjoyed frequent trips to the casino. Making friends wherever he went, John was selfless to a fault. He had a great sense of humor and always had a smile on his face.
In addition to his wife, Ellen, he is survived by his daughter, Karen (David) Fumarola of Watervliet, along grandsons David Fumarola, Jr., Ryan Fumarola and Dylan Fumarola of Watervliet. Other survivors include two sisters: Jean Vincent of Watervliet and Frances DiNuzzo of Duanesburg, a brother, Charles (Gail) Barno of Latham, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his brother, Frank Barno, and his sister, Theresa Hoefer.
The family would like to thank family friends Lori Farrell, Ashley Feller and Kayleigh Teal for all of their help in caring for John in his final days.
Calling hours will be held at New Comer Cremation & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet on Sunday, April 8, 2018 from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm, immediately followed by an hour of memory sharing.
