Chaikowski, JohnGUILDERLAND - John S. Chaikowski, 72, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2024, at St. Peter's Hospital, following a brief illness, with family at his side.John was born on October 4, 1951, to Walter and Helen (Bernockie) Chaikowski, in Hudson, where he and his four siblings grew up. From an early age, he was a gifted storyteller, keeping family and friends entertained. John was quite independent, having a paper route as a young boy, and serving as a stock boy/clerk at the First National grocery store later in high school. He also worked as a laborer for the Atlas Cement Company, to save money for college. He graduated from St. Mary's Academy, and SUNY at Albany, where he met his future wife, Faye Diana Kantor.
His interests were varied, and his Sociology major allowed room in his schedule to take classes in cinema, Greek, horseback riding, and art - a true Renaissance Man.Following graduation, John began working for N.Y. Telephone, where his 35-year career began as a clerk typist, and ended when he retired as an account executive, at age 52.John and Faye were married in October 1986, and became parents to Celia Anne, in 1997; and grandparents to Lorenzo, in 2019. He relished his role of "Daddy," and later, "Papa." He was generous with his time and resources, always willing to help a friend or family without hesitation.John became quite the accomplished cook, and loved hosting family and friend get-togethers. Game nights were particular favorites, and while the Chaikowski family competitions often needed a referee, they always ended with laughter. The many years of piano lessons and recitals led to family gathering around John at holiday time, accompanied by his brother, Walter, on cello.
John loved reading, crossword puzzles, and the occasional trip to the casino. John shared Faye's 34-year battle with cancer, which ended in 2022. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Lou Chaikowski. He is survived by his daughter, Celia Chaikowski, and grandson, Lorenzo; his sister, Jean Levine (David); brothers, Walter and Mark Chaikowski; and his nephews, Jared and Justin Levine.
