John G. Chevalier

August 18, 1940 — March 22, 2024

Niskayuna -
John Chevalier, 83, of Niskayuna NY, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 22, 2024, at Ellis Hospital. His partner and best friend of 30 years, Mary Lou Hodge, was by his side.

John was born August 18, 1940, in Cohoes NY to the late Edmund Chevalier and Ida Richard Chevalier. He graduated from Christian Brothers Academy and Siena College.

In addition to Mary Lou Hodge, John is survived by his daughter Carleen Goding (Daniel) of Savannah GA and his son John Chevalier Jr (Margaret) of Waterford NY, and their mother, Iris Chevalier of Rensselaer NY. He is also survived by his sister, Connie Buckley of Cohoes NY, his brother Marcel Chevalier (Barbara) of Cohoes NY, and his sister-in-law, Lori Chevalier, of Colonie NY. He was predeceased by his daughter, Claudette Chenot, and his brother, Richard Chevalier. John is also survived by his grandchildren, Charles Mikhitarian of Taylors, SC, William Wallace of NYC, and Iris Chevalier and Johnny Chevalier of Waterford. In addition, he is survived by Mary Lou's children and grandchildren, Timothy (Pamela) Hodge and Colin, Alec, and Ethan Hodge of Scotia NY, and Christopher Hodge (Claudine) and Cyle and Catelyn Hodge of Rotterdam NY. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.

John had a successful career with New York State for 37 years, first with the Department of Tax & Finance and then with the Department of Transportation from which he retired in 2002.

John enjoyed motoring his boat on Lake George and then sailing on Lake Champlain. He and Mary Lou were able to enjoy many wonderful days on the lakes together. After that, they hit the road for a few years seeing the sights and enjoying time in their RV.

When his health was better, John enjoyed playing golf, skiing, doing projects around the house, and working in his yard. In later years, he watched golf most weekends on TV. He also enjoyed following college football and basketball. We're sure he's not missing a moment of March Madness and is certainly rooting for Duke.

Thank you to the wonderful team of doctors, nurses and other staff at Ellis Hospital that took such special care of John in his final days.
