John H. Diggs, Jr.

Colonie- John H. Diggs, Jr., passed to a resting place on March 4, 2017 at Albany Medical Center. Born October 17, 1932 in Milford, CT, he was the elder son of John H. Sr., and Evelyn Diggs.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Doris M. Garner Diggs. He is also survived by their children, Shirill L. (Frank, deceased) Donato of East Greenbush, Kevin C. (Lori) Diggs of East Greenbush, Carol A. Taylor (George Palmer) of Clifton Park; grandchildren, Christopher Donato of East Greenbush, Sheri (Dale) Dudley of Spring Hill, TN, Erin "Bear" Donato of Dallas, TX, Daniel (Nicole) Donato of East Greenbush, Carrie (Jason) Story of East Greenbush, Kaylie (Ryan) Hall of Pensacola, FL, Hannah Diggs of East Greenbush, and Cory (Jennifer) Taliaferro of Queensbury; great-grandchildren, Alexandria Donato, Aidan Britt, Amina Dudley, Giovani Donato, Charlotte Donato, Taylor Hatch, Logan Hall, and Coen Taliaferro. Also surviving are his siblings, Shirley P. Blackwell of Newburn, NC and Charles W. Diggs, of Jacksonville, FL.
John was predeceased by his sisters, Mary L. Diggs, Ruth E. Diggs, Evelyn B. Waters, Carol McAllister, and brother James A. Diggs. He was also predeceased by three great-grandchildren, Brianna Pologa-Donato, Elijah and Jackson Hall.
John retired from General Electric, Aerospace Division after 37 years. He was a Manager in Quality Assurance. He held a BS in physics. He enjoyed volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters, was a motivational speaker for the American Cancer Society, and was a volunteer firefighter in Stephentown, NY. His hobbies included, wood working, fishing, gardening, running, and brain-teaser puzzles. John wrote poetry, was an excellent cook, and was an avid movie watcher.
John took an active role in the Civil Rights Movement, speaking before the Massachusetts Senate in the early 60s.
John cherished time with family and loved to sing songs and tell stories and share memories of his family history.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Stephentown Volunteer Department, Stephentown, NY 12168, or the American Kidney Foundation.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 11am at Community Gospel Church, 487 3rd Ave Ext., Rensselaer, NY 12144.
