John E. Tucker

GUILDERLAND - John Edward Tucker died on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland after a brief illness. He was 92. A long time resident of Albany, John was born in Watertown, New York, educated at Green Mountain College, and received a Ph.D. in psychology from Pennsylvania State University in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a faculty member in the psychology department at the State University of New York at Albany, and was the longest serving director of the University's counseling center. He also worked to establish the Albany Catholic Diocese Consultation Center in the 1970s. A practicing clinical psychologist for 48 years, John had a deep commitment to the health and well being of his patients. An avid sportsman, John played handball competitively in regional senior tournaments and spent many hours pursuing the perfect game of golf. John loved the arts and with his wife, Peg Tucker, regularly attended South Mountain Concerts in Pittsfield, Tannery Pond Concerts at the Darrow School, and the Chamber Music Festival at SPAC. He also loved jazz, modern dance, and poetry.
He brought to his relationships with family and friends complex qualities including curiosity and hopefulness, tenacity and honesty, respect and tenderness. He will be missed.

John is survived by his wife, Peg, a daughter, Georgia Tucker, a niece, Suzanne (Thomas) Innes, and a nephew, Peter Tucker. Two previous marriages ended in divorce. He was predeceased by one son, Paul Tucker.
