ALBANY - John Edward Barrett, 67, passed into heaven while at his home, The South Mall Towers, Albany, NY. He has no known survivors, though many in downtown Albany and across this city will grieve his absence.
John was born in Port Jervis, NY, on February 25, 1947 to Edward Barrett and Ethel (Lamberton) Barrett. He attended prep school at Mount St. Michael's Academy, one of the finest high schools in the Bronx. At St. John's University, he completed his undergraduate work, to later culminate with a graduate degree in Counseling Psychology from SUNY at Albany. He was employed in the field of residential care programs, until he became disabled a number of years ago.
With deep and often vocal pride, he served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1968 until 1972. As a language interpreter, he was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon and the Navy Aircrewman Insignia, a significantly difficult physical accomplishment. During his military career he was stationed in California; Texas; Maryland and Rota, Spain. John was a member of the American Legion, Zaloga Post #1520.
John enjoyed chatting over spiritual matters and would gladly lead the discussion. He was often frustrated by persons unwilling or unable to listen to him, yet he continued to march on in faith. He was a holy man. Like Christ, his beloved Master, he was known for making requests that were seldom convenient and always requiring the sacrifice of someone's ego. John taught important lessons in sober living to his fellow residents at the South Mall Towers and to a vast number of Friends of Bill in downtown Albany. John lived soberly for many years, and died continually sober, by the Grace of God.
His friends and acquaintances are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial in The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Eagle Street, Albany, on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 10 am. Rev. Francis O'Connor will preside. At 12:30 pm, the chaplain of the American Legion, Zaloga Post, will provide military honors during John's internment ceremony at the Saratoga National Cemetery.
Contributions may be made in John's name to The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Albany and to "Soldier On", 421 North Main Street, Building 6, Leeds, MA (online at WESOLDIERON.ORG). To leave a special message in memory of John, visit NewcomerAlbany.com
