Obituary for John F. Stiffen, Sr.
COLONIE – John F. Stiffen, Sr., 87, passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at the Stratton VA Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Born in Albany, he was the son of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Bosher) Stiffen.
Jack was a retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant. He served during WWII and the Korean War in the 24th and 30th Infantries. Jack was awarded two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star, Silver Star, and several commendations. He retired from the Watervliet Arsenal after 34 years of service. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Jack was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Frances, in 2007; brothers Edward and James, and sister Joan.
He is survived by his children; John, Jr., Michael (Gloria), Patricia (John), Edward (Cindy), and Janice (James); siblings Frank (Mary), George (Alice), Thomas (Sue), William, Robert (Mary), Betty (Wes), and MaryLeah (Victor); grandchildren Michael, Marcella, John, Alicia, Anthony, Marcie, Chase, Edward and Chantal; great-grandchildren Marra, Angelina, Xavier, Magnus and David John. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A special thanks goes to the entire staff of the VA (Albany) Hospice Wing, Albany County Hospice, and the Management of Beltrone Living Center.
A funeral service will be on Tuesday at 9:00 am at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie then to Corpus Christi Church, Ushers Road, Clifton Park at 10:00 am, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held. Calling hours will be from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center, Hospice Wing, 113 Holland Avenue, Albany, NY 12208 in Jack's name.
