John E. Fernandez, 93, peacefully passed away on May 30th, 2020 at St. Peters Hospital.

He was born in Albany, on September 13th 1926 to Lena and John Fernandez and was the oldest of seven kids. He is predeceased by his brother Emilio (Junior) Fernandez and his three sisters Catherine, Joanne, & Patricia Fernandez.

Ever since John was a little kid, he loved to listen to the sounds of the local drum corp that would practice in his neighborhood. He eventually learned how to play the drums after joining the Victory Drum & Bugal Corp and played for many years with the Grenadiers Drum Corp.

John served in the Air Force before being transferred to the Army where is was honorably discharged in 1947. He then worked for Mathew Bender for 25 years. During his time there, his company celebrated him for a 16 year perfect attendance. He retired in 1991.

During his retirement, John liked to volunteer his time helping out his church where he was a devoted catholic.
He also volunteered at his daughters middle school at St. Brigid's in Watervliet, NY where he was a cafeteria chaperone. He was loved by all of the kids as he always made them laugh and they frequently loved to call him "Johnny Boy". He was an avid reader of war books and also walked everyday along the Watervliet Arsenal until he moved to Colonie, NY.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice and daughter, Christine (Brian); Paul Fernandez and wife Shirley Fernandez; Jerry Fernandez and wife Leslie, as well as his 9 nieces and nephews.

John and Beatrice have been married for 37 years and met through a pen pal program. They wrote to each other for 2 1/2 years before John made his way over to Hong Kong where he proposed to Beatrice and she happily accepted. They were married a few days later in Hong Kong. John suffered from Dementia & became blind by 2004. He was lovingly cared for by his wife until his passing.

John will be laid to rest at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery where he will finally rest in peace.

Memorial contributions in John's memory may be made to the Alzheimer Association in tribute of John Fernandez, or the American Foundation for the Blind.
