John M. Gibbons

May 27, 1942 — November 19, 2019

John M Gibbons died on November 19, 2019, after a short battle with cancer; he was 77. He passed peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.

John leaves behind his heartbroken family – his daughters Deirdre Gibbons and Aileen Butler (Jay) and his beloved grandchildren Fiona & Sean Butler and Matt & Mike Evans. He was pre-deceased by his wife Patricia (nee Dalton), their daughter Brenda Evans (Gary), his parents John and Bridie (nee Gavin) Gibbons and his brother Jimmy Gibbons.

John was born on May 27, 1942 in Brooklyn, NY. He served in the National Guard 69th Regiment (the Fighting Irish) from 1959 to 1969. During this time, he attended Brooklyn College and received a Degree in Business, while also working full time on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.

John met Patsy Dalton on an Irish Singles weekend in the Catskills; they were married in 1964, making a home in Brooklyn; and they had three daughters (each one his 'favorite') and four grandchildren.

John had a knack for business and he and Pat were career entrepreneurs. They owned a ski shop on Long Island and began running ski trips to the Catskills – this led them to buy their first bus, a ski area and an inn. While the ski shop and NoName Mountain were short-lived, Erin Tours and the Belvedere Country Inn became their legacy.

Together, they built Erin Tours into a thriving business, running bus tours to destinations from Florida to Canada and successfully challenged both New York City and Interstate Commerce Commission laws to introduce an innovative commuter transit service as an alternative mode of transportation to the municipally operated mass transit service.

When they retired from the bus business, John and Pat moved to the Catskills to manage The Belvedere Country Inn full time. They hosted many groups, families and individuals over the years, many returning to visit again and again.

John served in The Knights of Columbus and as a Eucharistic Minister at Sacred Heart RC Church in Stamford NY.

John retired to Guilderland NY to be closer to his daughters and grandchildren, where he was finally able to focus on his love of golf and became a tournament-winning player.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Christ the King RC Church in Guilderland, NY. All are welcome to join us and celebrate John's life. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a favorite charity.
