John J. George

March 14, 1920 — June 10, 2012

GUILDERLAND John J. George, 92, of Guilderland, died Sunday, June 10, 2012 at the Avenue Nursing & Rehabilitation Centre in Schenectady. Born and raised in Albany, he was the son of the late Theodore C. George and Anna (Keenan) George, who hailed directly from Ireland.
John served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II in New Guinea, Papua and the Southern Philippines. After the war, John went to work for the IRS and then the U.S. Post Office; retiring in 1984. John was known as the "mailman to the Governor" because the Executive Mansion was on his postal route. He was very proud of his family-run business, B&G Circulators. John was well known as a storyteller extraordinaire, regaling children and adults alike with tales of his adventures and heroic deeds. John married his true love, Joan L. Salisbury in 1950. Joan predeceased John just three short weeks ago. With his wife's passing, John was eager to be reunited with his wife in Heaven.
Survivors include his children, Patricia George of San Antonio, Texas; Susan Ventura of Troy; Therese (Ross) Famulare of Watervliet; Anita (Fred) Bohley of Nassau; Kevin (Kate) George of Rotterdam; Jil (James) Denn of Guilderland; and Maureen (Raymond) Irish of Altamont; 17 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. John is predeceased by sons John George, Brian George, and a stillborn son, Daniel; as well as his brothers William George and Joseph George and a sister Rita (George) Domery. The family thanks John's caregivers at The Avenue for their long and steadfast dedication to providing him with the utmost care and comfort. A funeral service for friends and family will be held at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, on Saturday, June 16th, 2012 at12 p.m. Calling hours will follow the service from 12:30 to 2:00 pm at the funeral home.
