John "Jack" Callahan

January 2, 1926 — May 14, 2015

Colonie- John Callahan of Colonie passed into eternity on May 14th 2015 after a short illness at St. Peter's Hospital. He was born in Albany on January 2nd, 1926, son of the late Mary Molitor Callahan & Farrell Callahan.

He is survived by his wife Bernice Callahan, a daughter Deborah Callahan Montgomery of Miami, FL, stepdaughter Laurie Tracy of Colonie. He is also survived by his brother Robert (Mary) Callahan of Albany as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins and by his sister in law Betty (the late Harold) Wilson, two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. John is predeceased by his brother Donald (Margaret) Callahan.

Mr. Callahan was a lifelong resident of the Albany area. He was employed by the New York Telephone Company as a lineman, installer/repairman and a special circuit technician retiring in 1988 after 43 years of service. He retired from the US Navy as Quartermaster Chief after 39 years of service to his country. He served convoy duty between Norfolk and North Africa during WWII aboard the DE USS Gandy and DE USS Cockrill as well as serving in Argentia, Newfoundland aboard the Air Craft Carrier Guadalcanal during the Korean War. He was on the Admirals Staff and served in NYC with the Military Police. He retired from the Naval Reserve Forces in 1982. He worked for the NYRA for 9 years as a security guard at the Saratoga Race Course.
Mr. Callahan was an active member for the VFW Post 420 and the American Legion Post #70 in Saratoga Springs for 35 years , Colonie Lodge of Elks 2192 for 46 years , Capital District Chief Petty Officers Association and The Telephone Pioneers of America.

John enjoyed traveling, boating on Lake George, trips to the seashore at Atlantic City as well as his home in Lakeland, FL. John will be missed by his many friends and family as well as "Sadie" his dear Boston Terrier.

Calling hours will be held Monday May 18th 2015 from 4:00-7:00pm at New Comer Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Christ Our Light Catholic Church, 1 Maria Drive, Albany, NY 12211 on Tuesday May 19th 2015 at 10:00am. Interment will follow the mass at Gerald B.H. Saratoga National Cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society in Menands, NY
