HALFMOON - John "Jack" R. Penney, 80, passed away on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, NY.
Born on December 8, 1937 to John A. and Vivian L. Tetrault Penney in Worcester, MA, Jack resided in the New York State Capital District most of his life. He graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in 1955 and received a degree in Engineering Draft and Design from Hudson Valley Community College in 1957. Jack served in The US Air Force during the Cold War's Berlin Crisis of 1961. As a lifetime employee of the NYS Department of Transportation, Jack was especially fond of his years as an assistant bridge maintenance engineer when he coordinated and supervised several bridge crews in the surrounding counties. When he retired in 1994, he continued with his two favorite past times - motorcycling and flying.
Jack married Susan Rose Penney of East Pitcairn, NY on February 1, 1969. He always considered family needs and functions as his first and foremost responsibility. In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by a son, Eric Penney and his wife Ashley of Dunwoody, GA; three grandchildren, Matthew and Mikaela Brander of Stratford, CT and Luke of Dunwoody, GA, a godson, US Army Capt. Andrew Ginther, and several nieces, nephews and cousins residing out-of-state and in Canada. He is predeceased by his parents, his beloved stepmother, Margaret "Peg" Penney, and his brother, Richard.
The family extends sincere appreciation to the staff of St. Peter's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where Jack received kind and compassionate care.
A funeral service will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Rd, Watervliet on Thursday, September 6th, at 12 noon with a calling hour prior from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Interment with military honors will follow in the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY.
