John R. Kois, 84, of Colonie, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at Ellis Hospital on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 23, 2023. Born in Albany, Jack was the son of the late John and Jennie Kois.
Jack lived most of his life in Colonie. He graduated from Colonie Central High School where he lettered in baseball, basketball, and bowling. After graduation he attended Barbering School in Schenectady. John did his apprenticeship in East Greenbush prior to opening his own Barber Shop in Colonie. Although his business changed locations three times, all were located on Central Avenue, his customers always stayed faithful to "Johnnie K."
Golfing, fishing, and bowling were a big part of his earlier years. On the golf course his name to fame was being "Short and Straight." Whether fishing for bass at Burden Lake or travelling to Canada to fish for walleyes on Great Bear Lake he enjoyed his time on the water. But bowling was his thing. At one point he bowled in leagues every night of the week and twice on Sunday. He competed on TV Tournament Time and was the proud recipient of a Perfect 300 Game Ring. But his biggest triumph at the bowling alleys was when he met his wife, Anne. Jack liked watching sports but loved betting on them more. When asked what his favorite teams were, he would always reply, the ones he had a bet on.
Jack is survived by Anne (Eugenia Marcelle) Kois, his wife of 46 years, his brother James (Terry) Kois of East Greenbush, nephew Jason (Tonya) Kois of Colonie, niece Jamie (Cynthia) Kois of Rensselaer, and Uncle Edward (Angie) Kosakowski of Albany; he is also survived by numerous grand nieces, grand nephews, and cousins.
Jack was a kind, quiet and gentle man who never had a bad word to say about anyone. He will be remembered, as always, enjoying gatherings with friends and family. Just a thought, but perhaps that's why he got us all together on Thanksgiving.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit Jack's family on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, from 4 to 7 p.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, NY 12205. The Rite of Committal will be held privately at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
