John W. Malthouse

November 6, 1938 — February 21, 2023

COLONIE - John William Malthouse, age 84, passed from this life on Tuesday, February 21, 2023. He was born on November 6, 1938 and raised in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was the youngest son of the late Raymond I. and Anna O. Malthouse.

John received a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and a Master's and Supervisory degree from SUNY Albany. He taught music in several area public schools and was former Supervisor of Music for the North Colonie Central School District, retiring in 1994.

John was very active as a performing vocalist and choral conductor. He was past choral director of Pineview Community Church, the RPI Men's Glee Club, the Mohawk Valley Chorus, the Schenectady Choral Society and the Dorothy Welch Choral Society. John also periodically sang with Albany Pro Musica. In retirement, he served as an Adjunct Professor of Music at the Schenectady County Community College.

When he was not teaching or performing, John hiked, skied and bicycled much of New York State. He loved the outdoors and never missed an opportunity to canoe or backpack into a remote location and camp in the Adirondack or Green Mountains.

An avid model train hobbyist, John created modular train layouts and turned his lower family room into a miniature rail yard. He belonged to the Toy Train Operating Society (Empire and Eastern Division) and artistically hand crafted many of the buildings and scenery used on his layouts.

John is predeceased by his wife, Shirley A. Malthouse; son, James L. Malthouse; and his brother Raymond I. Malthouse, Jr. He is survived by his son, Sean Eric Malthouse (Lisa) and daughter, Heather Malthouse Walker (Lon); grandchildren Amanda Malthouse Hamilton, Cassandra Malthouse, Jonathan Malthouse, Matthew Bell, Christina Malthouse, Corisa Malthouse, and six great grandchildren.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Home Medical Associates of Schenectady and those family members and caregivers who lovingly cared for John these last years.

A private graveside memorial service will be held for immediate family at a later date. Burial will be in Albany Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alliance for the Homebound People, P.O. Box 3203, Schenectady, NY 12303 (hmabny.org) or the Adirondack Mountain Club (adk.org).
