John P. Quine

NISKAYUNA-Dr. John Peter Quine passed away at age 90 on December 20, 2013 after a long illness. He was born in New York City on January 11, 1923 to Peter and Stravrula Eftaxas Quine, both first generation Greek immigrants. His family moved several times during the Great Depression, with his childhood spent in Hoosick Falls, Glens Falls, and finally settling in Troy, NY. He graduated from Troy HS in 1941, and with members of his freshman class at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute entered the US Army in 1943, serving in the European Theatre, ultimately being honorably discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant. He subsequently graduated from RPI in 1949 with a BS in Electrical Engineering and then went on to earn his PhD. from RPI in Microwave Physics. A lifetime member of IEEE, he spent his career at General Electric Company in downtown Schenectady and then
later at the Research and Development Center in Niskayuna NY as a Principal Engineer. He was the author of numerous technical papers, a contributor to several engineering books, and the holder of important patents involving microwave technology, radar systems and shielding technology. He also taught at RPI as an adjunct professor. Following his retirement from GE in 1988, he worked as a consulting engineer at Rome Research Lab at Griffiss Air Force Base. In 1958, John married Jean Louise Hotaling, formerly of Kingston, NY. They built their home in Niskayuna, NY where they raised their two children Susan Quine Laurilliard, of Niskayuna, NY and Stephen Quine, of Chappaqua, NY. A life long skier through his 70s, he was an original member of the Albany Winter Sports Club and was proud to say that he skied Tuckerman's Ravine. He was also an avid gardener. He enjoyed speaking French, German and Greek. He had a passion for history and was a world traveler. He was a life long Roosevelt Democrat and enjoyed discussing politics and current events with his family and friends. He believed in the importance of getting an education and working hard. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife Jean who passed away in 1983 after a long battle with cancer. He is predeceased by his sister Georgia Lopez Jenkins of Stormville, NY, and his brothers Thomas Quine of Boston, MA and George Quine of Troy, NY. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Quine Laurilliard, his son-in-law Kevin Laurilliard, and their three children, Emily, Daniel and Julia and by his son, Stephen Quine, his daughter-in-law Rebecca, and their two children Adam and Matthew. He is also survived by his brother Constantine Quine of Rensselaer, NY and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank especially the doctors, nurses and staff at the Vermont Veterans Home who welcomed John with open arms and who gave him loving and devoted care and companionship during the last five and ½ years.

Calling hours will be held from 3 to 7 PM on Friday, December 27, 2013 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie.

A funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Memory Gardens, Colonie.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send a donation to a scholarship
fund which is being established in the name of Dr. John P. Quine for
Troy High School graduates attending RPI.
