John was raised in Forest City, Pa. and then Schenectady, NY, graduating Mont Pleasant High School in 1952. He earned his bachelor's degree from Union College in 1956 where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.

John spent his retirement living in Worcester, NY with his wife and daughter. He was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church, participated in the Cornell Master Gardener Program, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved to fish, hunt, garden and then prepare the food from his own land for his family and friends to enjoy.
