COLONIE-John J. Riley of Colonie passed away on August 25, 2018. John was born in Albany, the son of Peter C. Riley and Anna L. Riley. He was predeceased by his brothers Daniel, Paul and Peter Riley and sister Joan Grogan.
He was a resident of Albany, Clarksville, Guilderland, and Poughkeepsie. During his time in Clarksville, he was an elder and treasurer for the Clarksville Community Church for several years.
John was a veteran of World War II. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard escorting convoys across the North Atlantic to Europe and North Africa. After he was discharged, he was employed as a locomotive fireman for five years with the New York Central Railroad. He retired in 1989 after working 38 years as conductor for the Delaware & Hudson Railroad. John was the General Chairman for the United Transportation Union for 14 years. He was a charter member of the Guilderland Elks Lodge 2480.
John was the beloved husband of Genevieve Riley for 71 years. He was the father of John J. Riley and his wife Susan of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Joseph D. Riley and Corinne of Poughkeepsie. He was the cherished grandfather of Shauna, Jeremy, Jackelyn, and Jenna and great-grandfather to six great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held at New Comer Cremations & funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Albany, Ny 12205, on Thursday(8/30/18), from 11:00am-1:00pm with a service to immediately follow. Internment will be at the Evergreen Memorial Park in Colonie.
