John L. Ryan, 86 of Guilderland, a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on July 15, 2023. John prioritized family and friendship. Born in Cohoes, he was the son of the late Lubov (Libby) Wrench Ryan and John L. Ryan Sr.
John is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ann P. (Bisnett) Ryan. Their union was a shining example of love, devotion, and commitment to family life with all its blessings and challenges.
John attended Cohoes High School before graduating from Fulton Montgomery Community College where he earned an associate degree of science at the age of 40 while working full time and raising a family. He spent his early career in the trucking industry, followed by decades in transportation management for Life Savers and the New York State Department of Transportation.Family meant everything to him. As a father, John poured his heart and soul into raising his four children. They brought him immense joy, and he was their greatest cheerleader and biggest fan. He volunteered his time coaching sports and as a leader in the Boy Scouts of America. He never missed a child's sporting or school event. He cherished his four grandchildren and was blessed in most recent years with the arrival of his two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by his sister, Shiela (Albert) Sprega; his children, Shelly (Ernest) Ryan-Schrader, Paula Ryan, Tracy (Christopher) Giglio, and Timothy Ryan; grandchildren, Erin (Tay) Giglio, Kathryn (Joshua) Bland, Anna Giglio and Christopher Ryan; great-grandchildren, James and Joseph Bland; and many nieces and nephews (46 in total). He was predeceased by his parents, and brother, William (Philomena) Ryan.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, NY, 12205. A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 28 at 10 a.m. at Saint Madeline Sophie Catholic Church, 3500 Carman Road, Schenectady, NY 12303.
