COLONIE – John "Don" Scherer, 73, passed away on Monday, August 23, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Don was born on April 18, 1937 in Albany and was the son of the late John Henry and Elizabeth Johanna (Huber) Scherer. He worked as a plumber and steamfitter for Local No. 7 for 50 years before retiring in 1998. He then worked part time as a transporter for several local car dealers. He enjoyed shooting, fishing, and hunting, spending weekends at his cabin at Sacandaga, but most especially spending time with family. He was a member of the Colonie Elks, Watervliet Fish and Game Association, Sunset Farms, and Christ Lutheran Church.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Gudrun A. "Goodie" (Pochwalla) Scherer; his children, John D. (LuAnn) Scherer of North Greenbush and Karen L. (Michael) Benedetto of Loudonville; his grandchildren, Anna, Brian, Steven, and Deanna; his sister-in-law, Inge (Fred) Backhaus; and two nephews, several great nephews and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church, 1500 Western Ave., Albany. Calling hours will be held at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
