GUILDERLAND – John W. Gross, 84, of Guilderland, died Sunday, May 2, 2010 at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home among his loving family.
John was born in Binghamton, NY, the son of the late Wallace E. and Elizabeth D. Gross. He was a 1944 graduate of Christian Brothers Academy in Albany. After serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, he attended Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ. In 1988, John retired from the U.S. Postal Service after some 30 years.
John loved family gatherings, hiking, music, talk shows, golf in the summertime and bowling in the wintertime. He served his neighbors as a volunteer fireman and as a driver for Community Caregivers. Loss of vision curtailed these activities for the past 7 years. Nonetheless, he remained as active as he was able, and through the good graces of volunteers for the blind, joining the Capital Region Blind Gold League and the Blind Bowling League. He was sincerely thankful for their help in enhancing his quality of life; particular appreciation is given to Bill Rinaldo (recently deceased) and Les Bernard, golf coaches, and to Joe and Charlotte Laramie who live their lives to the fullest, inspiring others to do the same.
John is survived by his dear wife of almost 59 years, Mary Louise Dennehy Gross; sons, John W. Gross, Jr. of Clifton Park, James J. Gross (Lynne Casper) of Albany, and Thomas A Gross of Chicago, IL.; brothers-in-law, James and William Dennehy and Raymond Browne and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Mary G. Browne and Carolyn G. Sherman.
John's family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Green section of Daughters of Sarah for their loving care for him and many thoughtful acts during our visits.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.). A calling hour will precede the service from 1 to 2 p.m.
Interment with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.
