Colonie- John W. Layton, 73, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy, after a difficult struggle with cancer. Born in Albany he was the son of the late Joseph and Marie (Weber) Layton. A lifelong area resident John moved to Colonie in 1954. John had served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict Era. He had worked for the NYS OGS for 25 years retiring in 1994 as the Fleet Management Dispatch Supervisor. He loved fishing and the outdoors. John enjoyed square dancing and traveling with his life-long best friend and wife, Pauline. He mostly enjoyed making other people happy. John was a member of the Colonie Elks Lodge #2192, the H.B. Kuhn Senior Center, and also a member of the Latham Circle Squares. He is predeceased by his brothers; Joseph, Arthur, and Edward, and his sister Georgeanna. The family would like to thank the oncology nurses of St. Mary's Hospital for their care and support.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years Pauline (DeRocher) Layton of Colonie, two daughters; Barbara A. (Thomas) Sponable of Syracuse, and Sharon R. (Ronald) Otty of Colonie, and two sons; John W. (Wendy) Layton, Jr. of Altamont, and David P. (Kelly) Layton of Schodack. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; Matthew, Christopher (Amy), and Katie Sponable, Jennifer and Sarah Otty, and Andrew, and Jessica Layton, four great-grandchildren; Krystine, Cody, Hunter, and Molly, one niece, and two nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 8:30 AM at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.). We will then proceed to Our Lady of Mercy Church, where a mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 AM. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice in memory of John W. Layton.
