NISKAYUNA – John W. Nylin, 81, passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at Ellis Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
John was born on June 30, 1927 in Brooklyn and was the son of the late Peter Eugene Gabriel and Minnie Irene (Boyd) Nylin. He graduated form Southside High School in Rockville Centre, LI, NY. He was drafted in the US Army on September 16, 1945, serving in the Panama Canal Zone as military police and was honorably discharged on December 14, 1946, attaining the rank of Private First Class. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1951 and a Bachelors of Science in Metallurgical Engineering in 1952 from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. He married Margaret A. King on October 22, 1960 at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre, LI.
John worked on nuclear fuel for the first nuclear submarine Nautilus for Bettis in Pittsburgh, PA; Sylvania Corning Nuclear in Hicksville, LI; National Lead in Albany and then retired from GE KAPL in Niskayuna. He enjoyed gardening, going to Jones Beach, golfing, bowling and many other sports, was a fan of the NY Mets and NY Giants, but most especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren's sporting events.
John is survived by his loving wife, Margaret A. Nylin; his son, Peter Nylin and his wife Jennifer and their children, Brandon and Aidan; his daughter, Cheryl Johnson and her children, Cristianne, Taylor Joseph, Logan Gabrielle and Rhiannah; his son, Paul Nylin Sr. and his children, Pauly and Gina; his sister, Joan Bullock and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Nylin.
Funeral services will be held at 8:00 a.m. Monday at New Comer-Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.) then to St. Helen's Church, 1803 Union St., Niskayuna where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
