Albany- John W. Van Wie, Sr., 86, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 18, 2006, at the Barnwell Nursing Home in Valatie. Born in Albany he was the son of the late Irving and Helen (Quinn) Van Wie. John was a Veteran of WWII and was awarded the Bronze Star, serving with Company B 801st Tank Destroyer Battalion as a Staff Sergeant. John was a lifelong Finish Carpenter as can be attested by his many works in this area. John is predeceased by his first wife Elizabeth Van Wie, his great-grandson Andrew Van Wie, with whom he is now sitting at Heaven's kitchen table, and also his brother Joseph Van Wie.
Survivors include his wife Beverley Van Wie; sons John (Pat) Van Wie, Robert (Pierette) Van Wie, Thomas Van Wie, William (Gail) Van Wie, Leslie (Mary Ann) Fox, Gary Fox; daughters Carol Chmielinski, Lynn Gaidusek and Lori (Chuck) Merritt. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his sister Elizabeth Crowley and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the Community Hospice of Columbia-Greene and to the staff of Barnwell Nursing Home, for the comfort given to John in his final days.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.). Calling hours will be held on Sunday from3:00 to 6:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Loudonville, NY 12211 in memory of John W.
