OBITUARY
COLONIE – Jolan Burgess, 96, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2013. Born in Vahovce, Slovakia, she left Europe at the age of twelve and migrated to Argentina where she was raised by her grandparents and Aunt Julia. After her aunt Julia married, Jolan traveled extensively with her. Jolan became an U.S. citizen in 1941.
She met her husband Paul in Florida in the 1940's. After Paul was released from his military duty in 1945, he asked Jolan to marry him and they moved to New York. Paul and Jolan married on January 12, 1946 in Greenwich, NY and their son Daniel was born a year later. They moved to Colonie in the 1950's and Jolan worked for the South Colonie School District from 1959 until 1981. Jolan tutored Spanish and spoke four languages. She enjoyed reading, painting, gardening, sewing, playing cards, bingo and watching soap operas.
Jolan was the beloved wife of Paul J. Burgess until his passing in 1988. She is the loving mother of Daniel F. (Melinda) Burgess and the cherished grandmother of Brenda Anne (Thomas) Pesano, Jennifer Lynn Burgess and Daniel A. Burgess.
Funeral services will be on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Calling hours will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be Memory Gardens, Colonie.
