Guilderland- Jon J. McCloskey passed away suddenly of natural causes on January 7, 2022.
Jon is the son of the late John and Inez McCloskey of Johnson City, NY. He and his twin brother Peter were born on August 21, 1946. He was educated in the Johnson City school system and achieved a Masters of Arts in Economics at SUNY Albany in 1972. Jon continued his education to accumulate sufficient credits to earn a PhD in economics, but was just short a dissertation to complete requirements.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1969-1970.
Jon began his long term state service with the NYS Department of Audit and Control in 1969. In 1972 he transitioned into the NYS Legislature and worked in various fiscal capacities in both the NYS Assembly and Senate. Jon noted that during his career he managed to be employed by both legislative majorities and minorities at various times. He served as the Director of Committees on Racing and Wagering and was considered a well respected authority on these issues. He retired in 2002 and continued part time work as a racing analyst for several years.
Jon was known to be quite the athlete. In his earlier years he was a US Olympic try out for boxing. A long distance hiker and rock climber, he was a member of the 46'ers Club and travelled all over the country and world to pursue these interests. Later, he took up golf and played in many leagues throughout the Capital District. He was co-founder of "The Loop" at Western Turnpike golf course and was particularly proud of his two holes in one. Jon was a long term member of the Elks in Guilderland.
Besides his many accomplishments, Jon will be long remembered for his compassion for animals. He lovingly cared for many dogs and cats, both his own and sometimes even his neighbor's, and donated regularly to a number of rescues. He had a kind and caring heart.
Jon is survived by his twin brother Peter of Mt. Morris, NY and innumerable friends. He will be missed.
As per his wishes, Jon's cremains will be interred at the Gerald Solomon National Cemetery in Saratoga, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville, NY 12871, on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at 12pm.
In order to accommodate his many friends, there will be a celebration of life service
January 29, 2022 12:30-1:30pm at the Guilderland Elks, 3867 Carman Road, Schenectady, NY. Reception to follow from 1:30- 3:30pm.
Remembrances will also be held at Cat's Meow Restaurant, 14 New Karner Rd. Albany, NY on February 13, 2022 from 2pm-4pm and The Maple on the Lake Restaurant, 141 Warner's Lake Rd., East Berne, NY. (hours to be determined) on February 20, 2022.
