Joseph Cohen

Guilderland – Joseph L. Cohen, 86, passed away peacefully at home Thursday October 16, 2008.

Joseph was born in Newport, RI the son of the late Egydio and Germana Cohen. He received his Bachelor's degree from NYU and went on to earn his law degree from Brooklyn Law School. Joe proudly served in the US Army Air Corps during both WW II and the Korean War as one of the original Tuskegee Air Men.

After school and military he then served the citizens of New York. Joe worked as an Attorney for New York State Comptrollers office for almost thirty years. He also served on and was past president of: NAACP of Albany, St. Catherine's Home for Children, Workshop Inc, Guilderland Elementary PTA, BOCES of Albany, Schenectady, Schoharie Counties, ACOI (Albany County Opportunity Incorporated) and Hope House of Albany. He was also a board member of the Albany Urban League, a New York Giant and Met fan and enjoyed painting and gardening.

Joe is survived by his wife of 46 years, Helen B. (Cunningham) Cohen, their son Lino Cohen, sister Theodora Carpenter, brothers; John Cohen and Egydio Cohen and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Joseph Jr., three sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be held Monday 9:15am from New Comer-Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. (Rt 155 south of Central Ave.) Colonie, then to Christ the King Church, Guilderland where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am. Calling hours will be Sunday 3:00 to 6:00pm at the funeral home. The parish family of Christ The King will Gather at 4:30pm on Sunday at the funeral home for a service of prayer and remembrance. All are welcome. Interment will be at Memory's Garden Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Rd., Colonie, NY 12205.
