He was born on February 13, 1941 to the late Joseph and Cecilia Pettograsso in Albany.
Joseph, better known as Coach Joe or Papa Joe, will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father and papa. A kind and loyal brother, uncle and best friend. He spent much of his life either playing or coaching various sports with an emphasis on baseball and basketball. Joe's coaching career extended well beyond coaching his own children and grandchildren as it was his true passion. Joe enjoyed his free time following the Yankees, fishing, visiting various casinos, and sharing his love of horses with his son, Anthony.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Bonnie Elaine Pettograsso and their children, Michele, Tony (Lisa), Chris (Tracey), and daughter-like lifetime family friend, Frenchie McCarthy (Michael) and grandchildren, Myles, Shayla, Ella and Ryan. Joe is also survived by his siblings, Jo-Anne Peek, Carmela Ostrander, and Michael and many nieces and nephews as well as his long-time best friend David Raabe.
Toward the end of his coaching career, Joe had the opportunity to coach youth at the South End Children's Café in Albany, NY. He was deeply moved by their mission and community need. In lieu of flowers, he would be honored if you would donate to the South End Children's Café on his behalf. The mission of the South End Children's Cafe is to impact food security, address food equality and food justice, enhance academic success and positively influence the physical and mental health of children by offering free, healthy meals along with homework help, academic enrichment, mentoring, exercise and participation in the arts.
