SCHENECTADY – Joseph Robert "Babe" Stachewicz, 83, of Schenectady, passed away on Friday September 28, 2012 at his residence. Joe was predeceased by his mother, Felicia McCumber Fijalkowksi.
He was born in Schenectady and was educated in the Catholic School system. Joe enlisted in the US Army in 1946 and received his basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama. He was stationed at Ladd Air Force Base in Alaska and assigned to the 16th MP Company, serving at various posts with the Military Police and was honorably discharged in 1949.He was employed at Sears & Roebuck Company until 1962. Joe was the owner/operator of Cavanaugh's Card Shop on Albany Street until 1972. He worked for Dearstyne Tobacco Co. and United Baking Company before being employed with Schenectady International for sixteen years, retiring in 1992.
Joe loved to garden and spent most of the summer months just "talking" to his plants, taking pride when his flowers bloomed and sharing his vegetable harvest with his family and friends. He found great joy in bowling for many years. Joe belonged to the Food Merchants League and served a term as its President. He was also a member of the Sunnyview League until 2004
He is survived by his beloved wife, Eugenie; his children, Faith (Michael) Gifford, Michael J. (Brenda) Stachewicz and Robert P. (Susan) Stachewicz. He is the grandfather of Jennifer Gifford, Noah Stachewicz, Charles Schumaker and Nicole Schumaker. Great grandfather of Amaya, Hailey, Alexis, Nikolas, Ava and Charles Jr. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday morning at 8:15 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie then to St. Paul the Apostle Church at 9:00 where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 7 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union Street, Schenectady, NY 12308 in memory of Joseph R. Stachewicz.
