Albany- Josephine P. Gaston was born November 2, 1939, in Avera, Georgia, daughter Lewis and Hattie Mae (Brown) Gaston. At a young age, Josephine accepted Christ as her Savior and joined the Gethsemane Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Mitchell and was baptized in the river. She received her formal education in the "Old School House" and later attended the Jefferson High School in Louisville, Ga. In 1965 Josephine relocated to Albany, New York and was blessed with the greatest joy of her life, her one and only son, Johnny, who was born in 1966. Josephine was a hard worker and was employed in different fields, to include domestic, manufacturing and food services at Memorial Hospital, where she retired after many years of dedicated service.
Josephine, affectionately known as "Miss Jo," was a proud and faithful member of the Sweet Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, joining under the pastorate of the late Reverend Willis F. Bruton. Josephine regularly attended Sunday school and Bible Study until her health prevented her from doing so. She loved her Church and hands down loved her pastor, the Reverend Dr. Elgin Joseph Taylor, Sr. Nothing surpassed her pastor's preaching and singing "Lord Do It For Me Right Now." Josephine was an avid sports fanatic and a loyal Dodger's fan and a devoted mother to her only child, Johnny, Sr. She was quick-witted with a natural sense of humor and hilarious storytelling. She loved good food, good music, and family.
On the morning of Wednesday, February 23, 2022, God called, and Josephine answered. Josephine peacefully made her transition into eternal life. In addition to her parents, Josephine was predeceased by her beloved son, Johnny, Sr., her brother, Willie Lewis and sister, Deaconess Martha Headspeth, Christine Goodson.
Celebrating her life are her sisters, Addie Marie Edmonds, Betty Jean Robert and Henrietta Gaston, grandchildren, Johnny Jr. and Jason Gaston, a host of nieces and nephews and beloved friend, Sarah P. Moulton, who went above and beyond in the care of Josephine.
Servant of God Well Done!
