GUILDERLAND - Joy S. Harding, 93, of Guilderland, N.Y., passed away on Monday, Febryary 7, 2022. Born to Lucie and James Shreffler in Ohio, she was a graduate of Lorain High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio Wesleyan University where she served as President of her national sorority, Delta Gamma.
For the next two years, she traveled as a Field Secretary for her sorority, subsequently earning a Master's degree at Florida State University. She then moved to Scotia, N.Y., to assume a position as a teacher in the elementary schools. In 1958, she married Dean E. Harding. Dean and Joy raised three daughters with whom they shared their love of skiing, camping, and travel. Joy also guided her girls as their Girl Scout leader. Joy participated with enthusiasm in many activities, including singing in the Capitol Hill Choral Society, weaving as a member of the Mohawk-Hudson Weaver's Guild, curling at the Albany Curling Club, which often took her and her teammates to the National Senior Women's Bonspiel out-of-state. She also served as President of the Albany Curling Club. Joy was an avid golfer, bridge player, gardener, and opera buff. Her love of traveling took her to Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe and Central America. She was a long- time member of Hamilton Union Presbyterian Church in Guilderland, serving as an Elder, Deacon, church school teacher, choir member, and co-chair of the Lord's Acre Auction.
Predeceased by her husband, Dean Harding, she is survived by her daughter Lynn (Dana) Gillenwalters of Altamont, NY, Cheryl (Tom) Petersen of Mammoth Lakes, CA., Lori (Ed) Muller of Derry, NH, grandchildren Lisa Chandler, Dana Lynn Canell, John Gillenwalters, Sara and Sean Muller, and great-grandchildren Bailey, Dylan and Evan Chandler, and Kaiden Canell.
FuneraI services will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Hamilton Union Presbyterian Church in Guilderland. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimers Association. Online condolences may be expressed at www.NewComerAlbany.com
