K Cynthia Alexander (Cindy), 67, passed away peacefully on Jan. 11, 2025, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany NY, with loving family at her side and with her favorite music (Adele!), her favorite scent (lavender), and her favorite treatment (gentle massage). Cindy was born in Catskill, NY on Nov. 1, 1957, and was a loving member of the Griffin and Nelson families.
If pearly gates exist, we’re certain Cindy arrived quickly and wasted no time reuniting with her beloved infant niece, Jacqueline … and with her cat Sophie, whom she bravely and single-handedly rescued as a feral kitten trapped behind a wall.
Cynthia graduated from HVCC and SUNY Albany and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Cindy held jobs in dental hygiene and law office management, but her greatest work was her open-hearted, kind nature. Cindy strove to make and sustain loving and meaningful connections—with family, friends, colleagues, neighbors, health care providers, and acquaintances—and to be and do better as a human being. While Cynthia loved music and nature, her greatest joy was the company of children. Cynthia shared trips to her beloved places with her nephews William and James, her goddaughter Megan, and the kids of friends and family. Cynthia’s kind spirit and compassion extended to children in the daycare, residential programs and schools she worked for as well as kids she randomly encountered. While working a department-store second job, Cindy encountered a young deaf girl trying to communicate with a group of wannabe helpers. Cindy’s evening sign language classes came in handy as she explained that the girl was saying her father was in the bathroom … leaving the little girl greatly relieved as the crowd dispersed.
Following Cindy’s wishes, an intimate group of friends and family will gather for a celebration of life on The Marginal Way in Maine when flowers are in bloom in the spring. Since The Marginal Way is undergoing a major reconstruction project estimated to complete in Fall 2026, we anticipate gathering for Cindy’s ceremony in Spring 2027. In the meantime, Cindy’s remains, surrounded by some of her favorite things, are temporarily and lovingly with Stephanie.
Cynthia is survived by her sisters, Stephanie Conde and Renea Justice (Steve), brother Kevin Conde, two nephews, William Cole (Amanda) and James Cole (Morganne), and her beloved great niece Matilda “Tilly” Cole, as well as many cousins, including Donna Schlosser (Michael).
Cynthia found peace and solace in nature. To honor her memory, she requested donations in her name to The Nature Conservancy, 4245 N. Fairfax Dr., Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203, www.nature.org/donate or 800-628-6860.
