ALBANY - Katharine Grimm Wolfe, 73, passed away at home on Sunday, June 10, 2012, surrounded by her family after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late John and Elfreida (Leiner) Wolfe. She is the sister of Robert (Florence); loving mother to Brian (Jennifer), Laurence (Linda) and Patrick-Scott Wolfe; cherished grandmother to Liam, Sean, R.J. Chace, Morgan, Connor and Sarah Wolfe; and beloved second mom to Kimberly Hornberger-Malcolm (Andrew, Zoe).
Born in Duanesburg, NY, Kathy graduated from Duanesburg Central School in 1957 and received her undergraduate and graduate degrees in education and history from the University of Albany. After 25 years of professional service to families throughout the capital region as an adult and child protective case manager for Albany County, Kathy retired and continued to pursue her passions for the great outdoors. Throughout the year, she could be found deep in the Adirondack Mountains or just about anywhere in North America pursuing her love of canoeing, kayaking, cross-country skiing, hiking, gardening and exploring. Friends and colleagues will also remember Kathy's leadership and commitment to nature conservancy through her association with the Taconic Hiking Club and as a proud member of the Schenectady Winter Sports Club. Among her many accomplishments, she climbed many of the Adirondack highest peaks, was a winter mountaineering instructor, ADK Trails Committee member and lead countless group trips into the wilderness.
The family also thanks the staff of St. Peter's Hospital and Hospice and all her caregivers.
A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Those wishing to remember Kathy in a special way may wish to make a donation to the Taconic Hiking Club.
