MELROSE – Kathleen Towne-Lutz, 74, passed away Monday, June 26, 2017 in her home. Kathy was born in Manhattan and was the daughter of the late John and Suzanne Towne. Kathy was a devoted wife to her late husband, Thomas W. Lutz. Additionally, she and her husband were long-term caregivers to the late Carlos Velasquez that Kathy reported was like a son to them.

Kathy received her bachelor's degree in Psychology at Touro College and her Master of Social Work degree at Columbia University. While living in NYC, she worked in many different social work roles. She was a primary therapist for the Salvation Army Women's Correction Services and later Lincoln Hospital and Mental Health Center. Additionally, she was a social work supervisor for an agency that ran group homes and an Assistant Director of the Social Services Department for the Henry Street Settlement which served homeless families.

After moving to Troy, NY in June 1999, she started working at the Commission on Economic Opportunity for the Capital Region (CEO) where she was a therapist and additionally provided social work services to elementary and pre-school aged children with serious mental health and behavioral issues. From 2007 until her retirement in 2017, Kathy was working at Seton Health Pediatrics as a clinical social worker. While at Seton Pediatrics she provided crisis intervention, case management and counseling services.

Kathy was known for her feisty spirit, having a huge heart, and seeing the best in everyone she met. She truly enjoyed helping people and worked to improve their lives in some way. Kathy was not only a humanitarian, but an animal lover and advocate. She always had dogs and cats in her life that she had rescued. She often took animals in that were unwanted by other people. There was always room in her home and heart for one more. Additionally, she would regularly donate to various local and national animal related charities.

Following Kathy's wishes, there were no funeral services. Memorial contributions may be made to any animal welfare organization of your choice in memory of Kathy.
