It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of LaMar James Romeo, who transitioned on March 11, 2025, at the age of 50. A beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend, LaMar touched countless lives with his resilience, compassion, and dedication to uplifting others.
Born on February 27, 1975, to Jacqueline and Leroy Romeo, LaMar was the youngest of three siblings and grew up in Stamford, Connecticut, surrounded by family and lifelong friends. He attended Stamford Public Schools before moving to Virginia to further his education at Virginia State University. After a brief return to Connecticut, he ultimately settled in Albany, New York, where he flourished both personally and professionally.
From an early age, LaMar’s charisma and love for entertainment were undeniable. He had a deep appreciation for classic jazz and blues records, often immersing himself in the soulful melodies that shaped his lifelong musical taste. His passion for performance extended beyond listening—he was a natural singer who loved to take the stage, whether in impromptu dance battles or once confidently stepping onto the Apollo Amateur Night stage. A comedian at heart, LaMar had a razor-sharp wit, delivering skillful and often brutal rounds of “capp’n” or “playing the dozens” with friends. His quick comebacks and effortless sarcasm made him the life of any gathering, and his uncanny ability to recite dramatic and comedic movie dialogue with perfect timing deserved applause. Fearless and full of energy, LaMar thrived in the spotlight, always ready to entertain, challenge, and inspire those around him.
Over a decade ago, LaMar arrived in the NY Capital Region determined to turn his life around. With the support of his cousin, David Cornish, he entered the Addictions Care Center of Albany (ACCA), not only participating in the program but embracing a mission to help others facing similar struggles. His journey led him to become a peer leader and trainer at the Capital District African American Coalition on AIDS while pursuing higher education. He earned his Chemical Dependency Counseling credentials with honors from Hudson Valley Community College before graduating Cum Laude from SUNY Albany. Never one to settle, LaMar entered the accelerated master’s program, becoming a Licensed Master Social Worker and a Master CASAC II.
In the last five years, LaMar dedicated his career to providing clinical services for individuals battling substance use, psychiatric, and emotional disorders. As a highly skilled manager, trainer, and advocate, he was passionate about harm reduction and believed in building a strong foundation for others to succeed. A gentle giant with unwavering determination, LaMar often said, “It matters where you come from, but what matters most is where you’re going. If lucky enough to leave, make sure that you have a plan and pack some courage.”
LaMar cultivated a rich and multifaceted set of interests that reflected his passion for creativity, style, and connection. Deeply committed to his journey of personal growth, he was an active participant in recovery conventions, where he found inspiration and offered support to others on similar paths. A natural entertainer, he loved hosting guests, filling his home with laughter, good conversation, and the delicious meals he enjoyed cooking. His keen eye for aesthetics extended to home décor, where he took pride in creating a warm and stylish space that reflected his personality. A true connoisseur of fashion, LaMar had an appreciation for high-end streetwear, always stepping out in bold, carefully curated looks, often complemented by luxurious colognes that left a lasting impression. His artistic spirit also found expression through photography and collecting pop art, capturing moments and visuals that spoke to his creative soul and childlike spirit. Whether through style, hospitality, or artistic endeavors, LaMar embraced life with flair, authenticity, and an undeniable sense of presence.
LaMar’s memory will be cherished by his mother, Jacqueline (Jackie) Romeo; his sister, Frances Dunmore; his nieces and nephews; his extended family; and a vast network of friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his father, Leroy Romeo; his grandmother, Mary Church; his sister, Mary (Beanie) Romeo; and his godmother, Alethia (Angel) Williams, who nurtured and supported him throughout his life’s journey.
He embraced his loved ones wholeheartedly, no matter where they were in life or what challenges they faced. His love was unwavering, never conditional on circumstances or choices. Through every season—joy or hardship, success or struggle—he remained steadfast, always choosing connection over distance. He believed in the strength of community and the power of standing by those he cared about, offering support, understanding, and kindness without hesitation. His family and friends were his heart, and he loved them deeply, holding them close in both presence and spirit.
LaMar’s legacy is one of transformation, hope, and service. His impact will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.
