Laurence Gilbertson

d. September 10, 2023

Colonie—Laurence "Swisher" Gilbertson, 85, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, September 10 at Ludder's Country Home Care, with his daughter and Ginny Ludder by his side.
Larry was born in Hillside, IL and grew up in Baudette, MN. He was the youngest son of Laurence and Clara Gilbertson. He joined the Navy in 1943 and served his country in the Pacific during WWII. He was in a gun turret on the battleship Indiana when the ship landed at Okinawa and Iwo Jima. He was the owner of Smith's Gas Service in Albany until his retirement when he sold his company to J & M Schwartz Heating and Cooling. He then built a home in Lake Clear, NY so he could enjoy what he loved doing best, trout fishing in the Adirondacks. Some of his favorite places to fish were the Racquette River, Dawsons Pond and the St. Regis Canoe Area. Swisher especially looked forward to the Annual May Trip when he and his fishing buddies would take their fishing boats up Long Lake and into the Cold River. There they would set up camp at a lean-to, then fish and drink Genny beer and Black Velvet for the week. The many "Swisher" stories from the May Trip will be remembered and talked about for years to come as will his numerous funny sayings. Larry also cherished the times that he fished, camped, canoed and hiked with his daughter Kristin, Goat, Vinnie and Patty. The Fish Hatchery, feeding deer for the Tri-Lakes Snowmobilers Club, Hurleys Grill, Majors Inn, Charlies, the falls on the Racquette River, Little Green Pond, drives down Floodwood Road, backyard bbq's and his Lake Clear neighbors were all near and dear to his heart.
His daughter Kristin would like to express her sincere gratitude to the Ludder family, including Cougar and his many aides for the care and compassion given to her father during his stay at their home. A special thanks to Ginny Ludder for making her fathers 85th birthday a very very special day. The support from Rensselaer County Hospice, Nurse Donna, Nadia, Jim and Jerry is also very much appreciated.
Larry was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn Gilbertson. Survivors include his daughter Kristin Singley from Sand Lake; several nieces and nephews; devoted canine companions, Cooper, Atticus and Violet.
Inurnment at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery on Friday, September 23 at 3 PM to which friends are relatives are invited to attend.
