Laurie McMahon Gorski of Colonie died Tuesday evening after having suddenly suffered a stroke on Sunday evening, at 56 years-of-age. Under the supervision of her family and friends, and her previous consent, she became an organ donor.
Laurie was a daughter, little sister, friend, mother, wife, and nurse. She lived her life as a caregiver.
She served as Manager of Resident Services at Hawthorne Ridge in East Greenbush. Prior to this she served Teresian House Center for the Elderly in Albany for over 30 years, the last four of which she served as the Director of Nursing.
She was nurturing to her children, and inspiring to her husband, siblings, and friends. She inspired them all to be unceasingly and fervently kind. She was calm in the face of chaos, stable among instability, and she never compromised her integrity or her empathy. Laurie encouraged people around her to be open-minded, accepting, and considerate of everyone despite difference. She taught her children to be independent and yet unafraid to rely on and to trust others. She led them through the difficulties of forming relationships and gaining an education. She helped them learn addition in elementary school, edit their writing in high school, and told them to "suck-it-up" in college. She wasn't always there when they thought they needed her, but she was always there when they actually did, creating independently-minded but supportive and empathetic adults.
She loved coffee and crosswords with her friends and kids, and she adored animals, especially her Lhasa Apso, "Dunkin'," and liked to chat with her husband over breakfast every morning. Laurie loved her job, her looks, and her life. These past 6 months have been some of the happiest in Laurie's life.
Thankfully, she has provided us with the resiliency to deal with even the greatest of tragedies. Laurie's affection and tenderness was encased in her particular sarcasm. She used humor as a lens through which to look at life and to help others heal. We intend to do the same.
She is predeceased by her parents, Michael A. McMahon and Ruth D. McMahon, and father-in-law Stanislaus J. Gorski. She is survived by her husband, Stanley J. Gorski, mother-in-law Susan Gorski, children Sean Gorski (Marissa Gaines) and Kylie Gorski, and her siblings, Judith Morris, Michael E. (Barbara) McMahon, Deborah (Thomas) Eagan, and David (Dawn) McMahon, her sisters-in-law Karen (Thomas) Brewer and JoAnn (Dane) Fury, and several nieces and nephews who "Aunt Laurie" loved dearly.
Laurie loved and was loved by so many, that her family would like to welcome everyone to her services that will take place this Saturday, September 3rd, at 5 p.m. with calling hours from 2-5 p.m. at New Comer Funeral Home in Colonie.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Laurie to The Center for Donation and Transplant at 218 Great Oaks Blvd, Albany, NY 12203 to help raise awareness about the importance of organ and tissue donation or to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society for lost, abused, and unwanted animals at 3 Oakland Ave, Menands, NY 12204.
