Lawrence B. Kelley, Sr. "Poppy", 74, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Ogdensburg, he was the son of the late Bernard and Lillian Kelley. After completing his education, he proudly served with the United States Marine Corp. Prior to his retirement after 20 years with Taft Furniture, Larry worked for Oliver's Sewing Corporation, then opened several locations in the Capital District for Singer Sewing Company. Larry's entrepreneurial spirit also led him to owning and operating the Township Tavern in Berne, NY and he also owned several horses that raced at Saratoga Racetrack. After retirement, Larry dedicated his life to his children and grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Larry was predeceased by his brother John "Jack" Kelley. He is survived by his children Lawrence Bernard (Linda) Kelley, Jr., Jamie (Edward) Webber, John (Melissa DeSanto) Kelley, and Joey Lynn (Bryan) Cartwright, his grandchildren Alyssa, Lana, Zachary, Andrea, Mary-Lillian, Ava, and "his triplets" Jack, Mitchell, and Natalie; and his great-granddaughter Layla. Larry is also survived by his sisters Patricia Kelley, Sheila McDermott, and Sally Mackey, his former wife Florence Gardner, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday at 10:30 am at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, then to Christ the King Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30am. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 6 at the funeral home. The parish family of Christ the King will gather on Sunday at 5:30 pm at the funeral home for a service for prayer and remembrance. All are welcome. Interment will follow the service at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Guilderland.
