GLENVILLE-Leon F. Morse, 72, of Saratoga Road in Glenville, NY died on March 8, 2014 at Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born September 17, 1941 in Benson, VT.; he was the son of Leon and Evelyn (Schmerhorn) Morse. He was raised in Albany and graduated from Philip Schuyler High School in 1961.
Leon served his country as a proud U.S. Army and New York Army National Guard Solider with over 26 years of service. In 1966, he married his loving wife Virginia (Poteralski) Morse. Leon and Virginia lived in Rotterdam, Schenectady and Glenville throughout their 47 years of marriage.
Leon worked in Albany and Menands for over 30 years as an employee of the New York State Dept. of Social Services and retired in 1995 to spend more time with Virginia. After Leon's retirement, he devoted his life to taking care of Virginia.
While his children were young, he loved coaching Little League Baseball and was a loyal supporter of Mohonasen School District Sports and Band activities. He actively supported his sons as a Boy Scout volunteer. He loved taking family vacations, camping trips, history, traveling and Church activities as a longtime parishioner of St. Gabriel the Archangel Church in Rotterdam. He was a friend to all he met. He was also an exceptional swimmer, bowler, baseball historian and lifelong fan of the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. He was known as "Mr. Baseball" making frequent trips to Cooperstown, NY.
Leon is survived by his loving family including his wife Virginia and sons Christopher and Andrew; daughters-in-law Cathy and Ember and grandson Ira. He is also survived by his brother Ronald and his wife Beverly, sister-in-law Stephany along with many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers Everett and Albert.
Leon will always be remembered as an unconditionally selfless and devoted father and husband. The family would like to thank Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the care and kindness shown to Leon during his illness.
Calling hours will be held from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM on Friday, March 14, 2014 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday, March 14, 2014 at St. Gabriel the Archangel Church, 3040 Hamburg St. Schenectady, NY 12303.
Interment will be at Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Gabriel the Archangel Church, 3040 Hamburg St. Schenectady, NY 12303 or to The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America Upstate Northeastern NY Chapter, 103 Patroon Drive, Guilderland, NY 12084 in memory of Leon.
