Leona Hemingway passed away in Orange California on August 4, 2010. Leona was born in Pelham, New York on January 18th, 1919, to the late Charles and Gussy Montalbano. She was a resident of Saratoga, New York previous to residing in Orange California. Her late husband, John Michael Hemingway, was a Master Pilot in New York Harbor. The family traveled extensively, living in New Jersey, Florida then New York State.
In her earlier years, Leona was a clothing designer, working in the New York City garment district before and after World War II. She was also an accomplished artist with some of her paintings displayed in various art museums and galleries in New York State. Later on she became a homemaker raising 1 daughter and 4 sons.
Leona is survived by her daughter Lois Mary Daniela and her sons John Michael and his wife Kim, Robert Charles, Michael Charles and Thomas Charles and his wife Detra. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kelli Marie and her husband Brian Lee and Jackie Red Mike Hemingway. She is survived by her sister Rose Stoll and her Brother Paul Montalbano.
To Ken Frasier of Orange California, we extend our love and gratefulness for his many hours of compassion and ongoing help with our beloved mother. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 9:00 am at St. Clares Church, Colonie. Memorial calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 6 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie. A private graveside service with be held where Leona will be buried beside her husband in Evergreen Cemetery in Hillside New Jersey.
