SCHENECTADY, NY – LeRoy C. "Roy" Bird, 89, of Schenectady, entered into eternal rest on Monday, August 6, 2007, after a brief illness. Mr. Bird was a native of Albany and was the second of three sons born to Clyde and Leda (Keller) Bird. A decorated veteran of World War II, Private First Class Bird served in the 8th Infantry, 4th Division of the United States Army. He was in the first wave to land on Utah Beach on D-Day. While serving in Cherbourg, France, three weeks following this infamous event, PFC Bird was seriously wounded by enemy fire and later was awarded the Purple Heart. He was also a recipient of the NYS Conspicuous Service Star and the NYS Liberty Award. Following his honorable discharge, Mr. Bird returned to the U.S. and completed his education through the GI bill. Roy began his successful career with the Tax Dept. as an auditor until his retirement. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Rotterdam Elks. Roy is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ruth Oakes Bird. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and two great-grandnephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his two brothers, Willis Bird and Leonard E. Bird.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Calling hours will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Colonie.
